Gambling addiction is an emotional and spiritual problem that causes destruction and despair in many areas of the addicts’ life. Many people with a gambling problem believe that their problem is financial, and that if they only had more money that things would be better for them. The denial of the individual with the gambling problem is usually very strong, and this denial helps to minimize the reality and the true suffering that the person is experiencing. The individual with a gambling addiction must be treated for his or her gambling problem and start on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, the individual seeking help is usually in such severe debt that they cannot even pay their basic bills. The individual who is addicted to gambling finds themselves in such extreme debt as a result of ongoing compulsive behavior without understanding the consequences. When the gambling addict is in action, money does not seem real and excessive amounts of money can be lost. When an individual with a gambling problem makes a decision to stop gambling, the first thing that he or she usually faces is money problems and or a money crises. It can be mistakenly believed that their problem is financial, and not emotional, spiritual, and psychological. Gambling addiction is not a debt problem. Debt problems are the result of an out of control gambling addiction that must be stopped in its’ tracks. The financial consequences of a gambling addiction can slowly be repaired over time. If the emotional part of the disorder is not addressed, however, the prognosis for recovery is quite dim. Michelle Tee
